HIGHWAYS AND ROADS IN ICELAND: DRIVING IN ICELAND

Traveling around Iceland by car is one of the most recommended ways to discover the country, but also one of the things that generates the most doubts among visitors. Renting a car in Iceland is not like in other European destinations: the weather, the road quality, and the local driving rules make it essential to get well informed before your trip.
The good news is that driving in Iceland is not as complicated as some might think. The Ring Road (Road Nº1) circles the entire island and is paved, while other secondary or mountain roads require more caution. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know about Icelandic roads: their types, conditions, rules, and practical driving tips.
Types of Roads in Iceland
Iceland’s road network is divided into several categories, depending on their condition and accessibility:
-
National Highways
Main routes connecting the different regions of the country. -
Primary Roads
Mostly paved and connected to the Ring Road. -
Secondary Roads
Usually gravel, narrower, sometimes with potholes or puddles. -
F-Roads (Mountain Roads)
Lead into the Highlands. They require 4×4 vehicles only and often involve river crossings. -
Local Roads
Provide access to farms, fields, or rural accommodations. They may not be paved and often have names instead of numbers.

The Ring Road – Road Nº1 (Hringvegur)
The Ring Road is Iceland’s main highway and circles the island for about 1,340 km.
-
Fully paved all the way around.
-
Open throughout the year, except during severe weather, snowstorms, or volcanic activity.
-
Mostly one lane per direction, with a few wider sections near Reykjavik, Hveragerði, or Borgarnes.
-
Several single-lane bridges, where drivers must yield carefully.
-
Speed limit: 90 km/h.
It is the most traveled and best-maintained road in Iceland, ideal for those planning a self-drive trip.
Paved Roads
Besides the Ring Road, many primary roads are also paved.
-
Often narrower and with less traffic.
-
Some sections lack lane markings, so extra caution is needed when passing large vehicles.
-
Only 35% of Iceland’s roads are paved.

Gravel Roads
The majority of Iceland’s roads are made of compacted gravel.
-
Primary gravel roads: relatively wide and well maintained. Speed limit: 80 km/h.
-
Secondary gravel roads: narrower, bumpier, and sometimes merging into dirt tracks. Speed limit: 50 km/h. In winter they are usually impassable.
-
Important: gravel roads can look like asphalt but have less grip and longer braking distances.
F-Roads (Mountain Roads)
The most challenging roads in Iceland are the F-roads, located in the Highlands.
-
Marked with an “F” in front of the road number.
-
Require 4×4 vehicles by law.
-
The “F” designation usually means you will need to ford rivers or drive on unstable ground.
-
Driving with a standard car is strictly prohibited and not covered by insurance.
-
Closed during winter.
Example: the F208 south of Landmannalaugar, where river crossings are mandatory.
Road Conditions in Real Time
Always check the condition of the roads before driving:
-
www.road.is – Official Icelandic Road Administration with maps and webcams.
-
www.safetravel.is – Safety tips and alerts for travelers.
Road information hotline in Iceland: 1777 (English spoken). From abroad: (+354) 522 1100.
Driving to Landmannalaugar
There are three main routes to Landmannalaugar:
-
Road 208 north: the only route without an “F” prefix, accessible to standard cars.
-
Road F208 south and Road F225: only for 4×4 vehicles, with river crossings.
Recommendation: if you don’t have a 4×4 or experience on mountain roads, join a Super Jeep tour or highland bus for safe access.
Opening of Mountain Roads
-
Most F-roads remain closed until late June, depending on snowmelt and weather.
-
They usually close again by mid-September.
-
Outside this window, the Highlands are inaccessible by road.
Driving Tips in Iceland
-
Respect the speed limits: 90 km/h on asphalt, 80 km/h on gravel, 50 km/h on secondary gravel roads.
-
Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
-
Headlights must be on at all times, day and night.
-
Driving off-road is strictly forbidden.
-
In winter: always use winter tires and check the weather forecast.

Tours and Alternatives to Driving
If you prefer not to worry about road conditions, you can join guided tours with expert drivers and adapted vehicles:
-
Super Jeep tours to Landmannalaugar
-
Northern Lights by 4×4
-
Day and multi-day trekking tours
-

REYKJAVÍK
Welcome to Iceland! Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, the small island nation in the North Atlantic, just on the outer rim of the Arctic Circle. It is a small city compared to most European cities, but there is so much to see and do in the city limits, even before exploring the rest of the gorgeous country. There is a wonderfully curated museum which gives you insight into what you can expect to see during the rest of your time in Iceland. We highly recommend it before you set off on your spectacular adventure. Plus, we've included the entrance to the panoramic terrace at the museum - the best view of the whole city.
From here you can gain your first experience with traditional Icelandic cuisine at the best restaurant in town, which offers an all-you-can-eat buffet, allowing visitors to try all of the local dishes. Or try our food and beer tour which is sure to get you excited about local cuisine and drink! Plus it gives a great chance to get out, meet a local and walk the charming streets and lanes of Reykjavík.
Staying a night or two in the city also gives you ample time to go visit the number one destination on all of Iceland, the fascinating baths of the Blue Lagoon which will surely put you and your travel companions in the holiday spirit with some pampering and luxury before your ultimate Icelandic road-trip begins.
GOLDEN CIRCLE OF ICELAND
One of the first stops outside of Reykjavík should be a loop through the Golden Circle, one of the top trips made in Iceland. This Golden ring will take you past Thingvellir National Park (where you can see the division of the Eurasia and North American tectonic plates), then to see Geysir (the great-great-great- grandfather of all geysers and one of his namesakes Stokkur geyser who erupts faithfully every 5-8 minutes), and finally the Gullfoss 'Golden' Waterfall (utterly stunning and captivating).
SOUTHERN COAST OF ICELAND
The Southern Coast is another of the top tours made in Iceland by most visitors due to the fact that you see so much in such as short span of time and distance. You can start with the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, each one unique and each one equally beautiful and awe-inspiring. Next up are the magnificent black sand beaches of Reynisfjara's which grants visitors amazing views of the basalt columns which sit where the earth meets the ocean, as well as the sea stacks which rise out of the ocean off the coast, creating an eerily beautiful feeling.
The charming coastal town of Vík, showcases a typical Icelandic village, with a beautiful church sitting above the city, from where visitors flock to gain scenes of the glittering ocean below. With any luck, you'll find puffins on the beaches just out of town.
VATNAJÖKULL ICECAP AND GLACIER
Rounding the southern coast, you'll encounter the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. The glacier is majestic and there are so many possible ways to explore, whether to an ice cave, a walk on the glacier, or by snowmobile. This is to your great advantage as with your extended time, you can choose from more than one option and experience the glacier in more than one way, and really feel its might and power.
One of the most popular excursions in this area is to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (optional boat tour between icebergs according to season) which offers either a normal or a speedboat tour among the small icebergs which are dancing across the surface of the glacier lagoon. And when these miniature icebergs hit the black sand beaches, they cause the most dazzling spectacle, and give credence to the name, 'Diamond Beach' which is a 'must-see' as well.
SNAEFELLNESS PENINSULA
Snaefellnes Peninsula, while it is one of the top day trips from Reykjavík, the visitors only touch the main sites on the peninsula and don't do more than get on and off the bus. Here you can spend one, two or three days traversing the diverse area. The coastline is dramatic, with sheer cliffs at every turn. The old abandoned villages seemed to have been dropped from the sky. Mt. Kirkjufell offers the perfect background for any hike and gives Game of Thrones enthusiasts the chance to see filming locations and feel apart of the international hit show.
These are just SOME of the places you can see if you have anywhere from 1 week to 2 weeks or even better yet, 3 weeks in Iceland. The small island does not leave you lacking in activities and you'll wish you had even more time.

VATNAJÖKULL - EASTERN FIORDS
Rounding the southern coast, you'll encounter the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. The glacier is majestic and there are so many possible ways to explore, whether to an ice cave, a walk on the glacier, or by snowmobile. This is to your great advantage as with your extended time, you can choose from more than one option and experience the glacier in more than one way, and really feel its might and power.

Driving to the Eastern Fiords is a much forgotten area of the island, as many pass by it quickly, but with more time than most, you will get to drive in and out all of the little inlets and experience the fiords as they should be experienced: slowly and without rush.
LAKE MÝVATN AND SURROUNDINGS
Heading slightly inland towards Mývatn Lake area is another spot that too many are unable to appreciate fully. This geothermal active area is ripe with hikes, day trips, hot springs and sightseeing. To reach this zone, you'll pass through the old scenic route of Mödrudalur, and stop at a farm of the same name. While driving this route you can see Jökulsárgljúfur National Park with ice capped mountains, with the largest waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss and visit the "Canyon of the Gods", Ásbyrgi.
Most visitors to this area always wish they had more time to explore without the pressure to jump back in the car. Take advantage of your extra time in Iceland and explore in depth the entire zone.
HÚSAVÍK AND AKUREYRI
This is your chance to go whale watching and see some of the most majestic creatures in the sea not to mention the world. Húsavík is the whale capital of Iceland due to the fact that you have a nearly 100% chance of seeing whales if you go on a whale watching expedition. Not only that, the town itself is out of another world or time. It is a small fishing village, quite removed from the capital and all of its going-ons. You can experience how the average man, woman or child lives so far from the rest of the country. Húsavík is a beautiful town and deserves an extra day to amble about and get lost among the fishing docks.
Between Húsavík and Akureyri and just after, there are the Northern Fiords with wonderful lazy roads hugging the coast and granting the few who travel them the opportunity to see spectacular vistas. There are also several islands located in the ocean inlets or further north off the coast, even allowing visitors to enter the Arctic Circle- the only place in all of Iceland.
WEST ICELAND
This might be the area on Iceland that is least explored but which deserves the most attention. The Western Fiords are an intricate maze and web of roads and trails, all of which are worth the time to explore but are usually overlooked due to the lack of time. If you are coming to Iceland to see nature at its finest, cleanest and purest then look no further. You could not see another soul for a day up here and you'll feel as if you were transported to another period in history.
One of the last destinations before arriving back to the capital of Iceland, is Snaefellnes Peninsula. While it is one of the top day trips from Reykjavík, the visitors only touch the main sites on the peninsula and don't do more than get on and off the bus. Here you can spend one, two or three days traversing the diverse area. The coastline is dramatic, with sheer cliffs at every turn. The old abandoned villages seemed to have been dropped from the sky.
