WEATHER IN ICELAND – CLIMATE IN ICELAND

Many people assume, based on its name, that Iceland must be an unbearably cold and icy country with little reason to visit. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. The climate in Iceland—often called the “land of ice and fire”—is surprisingly mild, thanks to the Gulf Stream, and is one of the most fascinating aspects of traveling here.
The story goes that Iceland’s early settlers deliberately chose the name Iceland to discourage outsiders from coming, while calling the much colder Greenland something more inviting. Today, we know the truth: Iceland’s climate is much more welcoming than its name suggests.
You can always check the latest Iceland Weather Forecast before your trip.
Why Iceland Is Milder Than Expected
Iceland’s relatively mild climate, despite its northern latitude, is due to the Gulf Stream. This powerful ocean current, originating near Florida and the Yucatán, carries warm Atlantic water across the ocean, raising Iceland’s average temperatures by several degrees compared to other countries on the same latitude.
As a result, Iceland’s winters are often comparable to those in central Europe, such as Germany, rather than the Arctic extremes many expect. If the Gulf Stream shifted or cooled significantly, Iceland would indeed be much harsher and possibly uninhabitable—but for now, it remains temperate and livable.
Average Temperatures in Reykjavík
-
Annual average: 5°C (41°F)
-
January average: –0.5°C (31°F)
-
July average: 11–12°C (52–54°F)
Weather is famously unpredictable. As Icelanders say: “Don’t like the weather? Just wait five minutes.” It’s not unusual to experience sunshine, rain, wind, and even snow all in a single day.
Be Prepared for All Seasons
Even in summer, you might need a warm jacket, while in winter, you can sometimes enjoy surprisingly mild days. Occasionally, summer brings highs of 25–28°C (77–82°F), while in winter, storms can bring snow and strong winds.
This variability means that layers and waterproof gear are essential—something to keep in mind when packing for your trip.
Unique Weather Phenomena
-
Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis): Visible from late August to early April on clear, dark nights.
-
Rainbows: Frequent and often enormous, thanks to a mix of sun and showers.
-
Midnight Sun: In June and July, the sun barely sets, offering near 24-hour daylight.
Daylight Hours in Iceland
Winter days are short, with only 4–5 hours of daylight in December. By mid-February, daylight already stretches from about 9:00 to 17:30. In contrast, summer offers endless light, with the sun barely dipping below the horizon in June.

REYKJAVÍK, THE CAPITAL OF ICELAND

What's Reykjavík like?
In a nutshell, the capital of Iceland is modern, dynamic, creative, open, welcoming and very special.
Reykjavík is not like other European capitals, here you will not find towering buildings, historical monuments or a classic center in the medieval style of central Europe. But Reykjavík offers much more than what you find at first sight. Reykjavík is unique city, full of life, very modern but also clean, safe and very close to nature. The low and extremely brightly colorfed houses in Reykjavík give the city a special charm. Some of these little houses, with their elf and flower decorations, remind us of our childhood fairy tales.
Losing yourself in this capital is almost impossible. Two points stand out above the rest: one of them is the Hallgrímskirkja church and the other, the Öskjuhlíð hill, with the spectacular Perlan building. Stop dreaming and come to Reykjavík, it will surprise you.
OUR MOST POPULAR TOURS TO SEE AND FEEL REYKJAVÍK
Reykjavík, a green city
In Reykjavík the air is so clean that, from Faxaflói Bay, you can see all the way to the mountains about 100 km away. In fact, on a day of good visibility, you can see up to the Snafellsness glacier, which is located about 3 hours away by car.
The city is surrounded by the sea on three sides and has many open spaces and green areas. There are parks, pedestrian areas, a lake in the very center of the city and a thermal beach, Nauthólsvik, about a 15-minute walk from the center.
Reykjavík citizens try to protect their city and maintain its fame as the cleanest and most attractive capital in the world. A city without smoke and without danger. So visitors are expected to do the same so that Reykjavík never ceases to be a very clean and welcoming city.
Reykjavík, a historical city
The history of the most Nordic capital in the world dates back to 874, when its first settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, arrived. It was he who built his farm there and gave the name to this magnificent site: Reykjavík, which means "smoke bay". The name reveals one of the main qualities of Reykjavík and helps us understand the reason why Ingólfur chose this site. Finding the hot springs and seeing the smoke rising from the ground, he knew that Reykjavík was where he wanted to make his home.
The 16th century changed Reykjavík's history, as the city became an important place of commerce. But it would not be until the year 1876 when Reykjavík was finally established as an independent city, although it only had 170 inhabitants. Since then there has been a significant growth in population and by the beginning of the 20th century, it had some 6,000 citizens, which grew to 55,000 in 1950.
Today, 180,000 people, two out of three Icelanders, live in this city located in the south-west of the Faxaflói Gulf. This makes Reykjavík the most cosmopolitan city in Iceland, with many museums, galleries and cafes, which allowed it to be proclaimed in 2000, along with other European cities, as the European Capital of Culture.
The hot springs, which gave rise to the birth of Reykjavík, are today used by Icelanders to heat houses, apartment block stairs, swimming pools, parking lots and sidewalks.
Reykjavík, a city that never stops
Reykjavík is a city that never stops and always has something to offer. From big open-air concerts, to modern and original shops, excellent museums and small galleries with artists of all styles. Restaurants and nightclubs give a lot of atmosphere to the capital until late into the night and, especially during the weekends, the party does not stop until you want to.
Did you know...?
- Reykjavík only receives 4 hours of sunlight during the winter and in summer up to 20-22 hours a day.
- The average temperature in summer is below 12 ºC (although there may be days over 20 ºC), while in January it is -0.5 ºC.
- Reykjavík is the capital and the most populous city of Iceland but it only has 124,847 inhabitants (2018 data). If we count the entire region of the capital, the number reaches 222,484 (the population of Iceland as a whole is 348,450 inhabitants).
- The most common names are Jón (for men) and Gudrún (for women).
- The name "Reykjavík" is translated from Icelandic as "smoking bay".
- Although located in the southwest of Iceland, Reykjavík is the most Nordic capital in the world.
- The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in Europe.
- Major companies include video game developer CCP Games, airline Icelandair, radio station Ríkisútvarpið and biomedical engineering company Össur.
- Beer was banned until 1989 but since then it has been one of the favorite drinks of Icelanders and different craft beers can be found.
- Iceland has the oldest democratic parliament in the world. Its origins go back to 930.
- On June 17, 1944, the Republic of Iceland was founded, and a president elected by popular vote assumed the functions of the Danish monarch.
- In 1986 it hosted the summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, highlighting Reykjavik's new political status.
- In 1972, Reykjavik hosted the World Chess Championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.

HIGHWAYS AND ROADS IN ICELAND: DRIVING IN ICELAND

Traveling around Iceland by car is one of the most recommended ways to discover the country, but also one of the things that generates the most doubts among visitors. Renting a car in Iceland is not like in other European destinations: the weather, the road quality, and the local driving rules make it essential to get well informed before your trip.
The good news is that driving in Iceland is not as complicated as some might think. The Ring Road (Road Nº1) circles the entire island and is paved, while other secondary or mountain roads require more caution. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know about Icelandic roads: their types, conditions, rules, and practical driving tips.
Types of Roads in Iceland
Iceland’s road network is divided into several categories, depending on their condition and accessibility:
-
National Highways
Main routes connecting the different regions of the country. -
Primary Roads
Mostly paved and connected to the Ring Road. -
Secondary Roads
Usually gravel, narrower, sometimes with potholes or puddles. -
F-Roads (Mountain Roads)
Lead into the Highlands. They require 4×4 vehicles only and often involve river crossings. -
Local Roads
Provide access to farms, fields, or rural accommodations. They may not be paved and often have names instead of numbers.

The Ring Road – Road Nº1 (Hringvegur)
The Ring Road is Iceland’s main highway and circles the island for about 1,340 km.
-
Fully paved all the way around.
-
Open throughout the year, except during severe weather, snowstorms, or volcanic activity.
-
Mostly one lane per direction, with a few wider sections near Reykjavik, Hveragerði, or Borgarnes.
-
Several single-lane bridges, where drivers must yield carefully.
-
Speed limit: 90 km/h.
It is the most traveled and best-maintained road in Iceland, ideal for those planning a self-drive trip.
Paved Roads
Besides the Ring Road, many primary roads are also paved.
-
Often narrower and with less traffic.
-
Some sections lack lane markings, so extra caution is needed when passing large vehicles.
-
Only 35% of Iceland’s roads are paved.

Gravel Roads
The majority of Iceland’s roads are made of compacted gravel.
-
Primary gravel roads: relatively wide and well maintained. Speed limit: 80 km/h.
-
Secondary gravel roads: narrower, bumpier, and sometimes merging into dirt tracks. Speed limit: 50 km/h. In winter they are usually impassable.
-
Important: gravel roads can look like asphalt but have less grip and longer braking distances.
F-Roads (Mountain Roads)
The most challenging roads in Iceland are the F-roads, located in the Highlands.
-
Marked with an “F” in front of the road number.
-
Require 4×4 vehicles by law.
-
The “F” designation usually means you will need to ford rivers or drive on unstable ground.
-
Driving with a standard car is strictly prohibited and not covered by insurance.
-
Closed during winter.
Example: the F208 south of Landmannalaugar, where river crossings are mandatory.
Road Conditions in Real Time
Always check the condition of the roads before driving:
-
www.road.is – Official Icelandic Road Administration with maps and webcams.
-
www.safetravel.is – Safety tips and alerts for travelers.
Road information hotline in Iceland: 1777 (English spoken). From abroad: (+354) 522 1100.
Driving to Landmannalaugar
There are three main routes to Landmannalaugar:
-
Road 208 north: the only route without an “F” prefix, accessible to standard cars.
-
Road F208 south and Road F225: only for 4×4 vehicles, with river crossings.
Recommendation: if you don’t have a 4×4 or experience on mountain roads, join a Super Jeep tour or highland bus for safe access.
Opening of Mountain Roads
-
Most F-roads remain closed until late June, depending on snowmelt and weather.
-
They usually close again by mid-September.
-
Outside this window, the Highlands are inaccessible by road.
Driving Tips in Iceland
-
Respect the speed limits: 90 km/h on asphalt, 80 km/h on gravel, 50 km/h on secondary gravel roads.
-
Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
-
Headlights must be on at all times, day and night.
-
Driving off-road is strictly forbidden.
-
In winter: always use winter tires and check the weather forecast.

REYKJAVÍK
Welcome to Iceland! Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, the small island nation in the North Atlantic, just on the outer rim of the Arctic Circle. It is a small city compared to most European cities, but there is so much to see and do in the city limits, even before exploring the rest of the gorgeous country. There is a wonderfully curated museum which gives you insight into what you can expect to see during the rest of your time in Iceland. We highly recommend it before you set off on your spectacular adventure. Plus, we've included the entrance to the panoramic terrace at the museum - the best view of the whole city.
From here you can gain your first experience with traditional Icelandic cuisine at the best restaurant in town, which offers an all-you-can-eat buffet, allowing visitors to try all of the local dishes. Or try our food and beer tour which is sure to get you excited about local cuisine and drink! Plus it gives a great chance to get out, meet a local and walk the charming streets and lanes of Reykjavík.
Staying a night or two in the city also gives you ample time to go visit the number one destination on all of Iceland, the fascinating baths of the Blue Lagoon which will surely put you and your travel companions in the holiday spirit with some pampering and luxury before your ultimate Icelandic road-trip begins.
GOLDEN CIRCLE OF ICELAND
One of the first stops outside of Reykjavík should be a loop through the Golden Circle, one of the top trips made in Iceland. This Golden ring will take you past Thingvellir National Park (where you can see the division of the Eurasia and North American tectonic plates), then to see Geysir (the great-great-great- grandfather of all geysers and one of his namesakes Stokkur geyser who erupts faithfully every 5-8 minutes), and finally the Gullfoss 'Golden' Waterfall (utterly stunning and captivating).
SOUTHERN COAST OF ICELAND
The Southern Coast is another of the top tours made in Iceland by most visitors due to the fact that you see so much in such as short span of time and distance. You can start with the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, each one unique and each one equally beautiful and awe-inspiring. Next up are the magnificent black sand beaches of Reynisfjara's which grants visitors amazing views of the basalt columns which sit where the earth meets the ocean, as well as the sea stacks which rise out of the ocean off the coast, creating an eerily beautiful feeling.
The charming coastal town of Vík, showcases a typical Icelandic village, with a beautiful church sitting above the city, from where visitors flock to gain scenes of the glittering ocean below. With any luck, you'll find puffins on the beaches just out of town.
VATNAJÖKULL ICECAP AND GLACIER
Rounding the southern coast, you'll encounter the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. The glacier is majestic and there are so many possible ways to explore, whether to an ice cave, a walk on the glacier, or by snowmobile. This is to your great advantage as with your extended time, you can choose from more than one option and experience the glacier in more than one way, and really feel its might and power.
One of the most popular excursions in this area is to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (optional boat tour between icebergs according to season) which offers either a normal or a speedboat tour among the small icebergs which are dancing across the surface of the glacier lagoon. And when these miniature icebergs hit the black sand beaches, they cause the most dazzling spectacle, and give credence to the name, 'Diamond Beach' which is a 'must-see' as well.
SNAEFELLNESS PENINSULA
Snaefellnes Peninsula, while it is one of the top day trips from Reykjavík, the visitors only touch the main sites on the peninsula and don't do more than get on and off the bus. Here you can spend one, two or three days traversing the diverse area. The coastline is dramatic, with sheer cliffs at every turn. The old abandoned villages seemed to have been dropped from the sky. Mt. Kirkjufell offers the perfect background for any hike and gives Game of Thrones enthusiasts the chance to see filming locations and feel apart of the international hit show.
These are just SOME of the places you can see if you have anywhere from 1 week to 2 weeks or even better yet, 3 weeks in Iceland. The small island does not leave you lacking in activities and you'll wish you had even more time.
