RECOMMENDED ITINERARY ICELAND ON YOUR OWN PACKAGE
DAY 1: WELCOME TO ICELAND
Arrival in Keflavík International Airport. Pick up of the rental car. You will make your way to the northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavík. Accommodation in a nice hotel in a central location in Reykjavík.
DAY 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE
The Iceland most known tourist attraction is waiting for you. After the breakfast, you will head to the Golden Circle, where you will discover three amazing places. First, þingvellir National Park, where was established the first Icelandic Parliament and where you can also observe the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Then, you can drive until Geysir, the famous water fountain that has given its name to all the geysers in the world. Allthough Geysir is no longer active, its "brother" Strokkur erupts 20-40 metres up in the air. Finally, you will visit the "Golden Waterfall" Gullfoss, one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. If you are up to more sightseeing, you should head to Kerið, an ancient volcanic crater worth visiting. Accommodation in Hveragerði in a hotel with central location, thermal pool, jaccuzi and sauna.
DAY 3: SOUTH COAST
Today is the best day to explore the southern coast of Iceland. You will see beautiful waterfalls and other amazing sightseeing attractions. After breakfast you can start the day visiting the Hveragerði museum to try out the simulation of the earthquake that hit Hveragerði in 2008. Then, you can visit the Lava Centre (entrance to the cinema screening is included in this package). The next stop should be at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can go behind the water curtain. There you should look for Gljúfrabúi or "the hidden waterfall", which is indeed "hidden" to many travelers that don't know about it. Afterwards, you can head to Skógafoss waterfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, 60 meters high and 25 meters wide. Go to the upper part through the steep stairs and enjoy the view. Then, you must stop at Dyrhólaey, in the Vík area; where you can see beautiful beaches and cliffs where puffin colonies nest during the summer months. Accommodation in the area of the great Vatnajökull, the third largest glacier on the planet.
DAY 4: SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK - VATNAJOKULL GLACIER AND JOKULSARLON GLACIER LAGOON
To explore the Vatnajökull glacier area, you can book a hiking tour or do a trekking to Svartifoss, a beautiful waterfall with basalt columns. In the afternoon it's the best time to see Jökulsárlón, the impressive glacier lagoon full of icebergs. You can enjoy it from the shore or book the amphibious boat tour. Then you should head to the Eastern Fjords and enjoy the fascinating landscape. We recommend to make a stop at the Petra mineral museum In the Stödvarfjördur fjord. Accommodation in Egilsstaðir.
DAY 5: JOKULSÁRGLJÚFUR NATIONAL PARK. DETTIFOSS, ÁSBYRGI AND HÚSAVÍK
To get north there is no better way than going through the old scenic route of Mödrudalur, where you can stop at the traditional farm with the same name. Then you should visit the largest waterfall in Europe, Dettifossm the "Gods Canyon" Ásbyrgi, and Húsavík, the whales capital. Why is it called like this? Because it's simply the best city to take a whale watching tour! And that's why we have included for you the classic whale watching tour departing from Húsavík port. The percentage of whale watching in Húsavík has reached 97-99% in recent years. Enjoy the whale watching and the impressive landscapes and don't forget to taste here some of the best Icelandic food. Accommodation in the Mývatn-Húsavík area.
DAY 6: MÝVATN LAKE , KRAFLA VOLCANO , GODAFOSS, AKUREYRI AND NORTHERN FJORDS
We want you to start the day in the best possible way and that's why we have included the entrance to Geosea geothermal spa in Húsavík. Once you are again full of energy, you should visit the whole area of Mývatn Lake . In the morning we recommend a walk through the volcanic area of Krafla-Leirhnjúkur, where you can see the effects of the eruption of 1984. Don't forget to stop at Vítí crater, really impressive. Afterwards, you can visit Námafjall geothermal area, with a large number of fumaroles and boiling mud. Then, the "enchanted city" of Dimmuborgir is waiting for you. Go through the caverns and lava rock formations. In the area, Skutustadir pseudocraters and Hverfjall crater are also worth a visit. In the afternoon you should give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the Goðafoss waterfall, known as "the Gods waterfall", and Akureyri, the capital of the north. To end the day, you should head to Ólafsfjördur, fjord located north of Akureyri, where you can rest at your beautiful accommodation, in the midst of the nature.
DAY 7: WESTERN ICELAND
After breakfast you can head directly to the west of Iceland. Here you will find the hottest spring in Europe, the Hraunfossar lava waterfalls, the picturesque village of Reykholt and Langjokull glacier. You can also book a tour to visit the impressive ice tunnel inside Langjokull glacier. Finally, return to Reykjavík and accommodation in the capital in a nice hotel in central location.
DAY 8: REYKJANES PENINSULA. BLUE LAGOON AND DEPARTURE
We want you to leave Iceland with the best feelings and that's why we have included for the last day the entrance to the Blue Lagoon, the famous geothermal spa located between lava fields and worldwide recognized due to the medicinal and healing properties of its geothermal waters. It is indeed one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. Along the way to Reykjanes peninsula you will see ridges and lava craters of all shapes and sizes. From the Blue Lagoon, you can directly head to Keflavík International Airport, where your trip to Iceland ends, an experience you will never forget.
