ITINERARY FOR “BEST WINTER TRIP IN ICELAND”:
DAY 1: ARRIVE IN ICELAND / REYKJAVÍK / NORTHERN LIGHTS
Welcome to Iceland! And congratulations! You have chosen to visit Iceland during a time of year many people hide from the cold. But precisely during winter Iceland offers some of the best trips on the island, so you're in luck. After your arrival to Keflavík International Airport (KEF), you will hop aboard Fly Bus, a luxury tourist bus which will transport you quickly and comfortably to your hotel in Reykjavík or to one of the tourist bus stops which is closest to your hotel or accommodation.
Start your week long trip in Iceland with the reason you came and get your first chance to take in the wonder of the Aurora Borealis also known as the Northern Lights, a natural occurrence seen only at the northernmost parts of the Arctic, complete with an audioguide in 1 of 10 languages. The tour, lasting about 3-4 hours including transportation, takes you far from the artificial lights of the capital of Iceland which allows you to experience the incredible brilliant colors and glow from Mother Nature herself.
The audioguide comes on a tablet in 10 languages, and the tourist bus you will travel on also has WIFI and a USB charger. The guide also includes tips and hints useful for taking photos of the bright sky. Remember that it is important to come dressed for the occasion: water-proof and insulated clothing is highly recommended so that the cold doesn’t send you back to the bus before enjoying the lights to the max.
Night in downtown Reykjavík.
DAY 2: GOLDEN CIRCLE OF ICELAND / SECRET LAGOON
Surely you have heard of the Golden Circle of Iceland. There is no better way to commence your trip in Iceland then with the most popular circuit that includes some of the most popular and most visited natural attractions in Iceland. This particular tour takes about 9-10 hours and starts when you are picked up from your hotel or one of the indicated bus stops near your hotel or accommodation.
The first stop is Thingvellir National Park, better known as the continental divide between the European and North American tectonic plates. From there you will visit the impressive Gullfoss Golden Waterfall and then the geothermal zone of the Geysir (THE original geyser) and Strokkur geyser. To top off the Golden Circle, why not take a dip in the famous thermal pools of the Secret Lagoon.
Night in downtown Reykjavík.
DAY 3: REYKJAVÍK / PERLAN MUSEUM / AURORAS BOREALIS BY BOAT
After an exciting but exhausting second day, the third day is much more relaxing but still as invigorating-mentally and physically. In the morning you can start the day by jumping aboard the Hop-on-Hop-off bus which will take you on a tour of the capital, showing you the most important places and buildings that Reykjavík has to offer. Listen along with the audioguide to learn about Iceland’s history and pick up some cultural insights along the way. As the name implies, you can ‘hop-on’ and ‘hop-off’ as you wish and visit the places that interest YOU!
Be sure that one of those stops is the Perlan Museum, which boasts one of the best views in Reykjavík, amazing architecture, a planetarium, and an authentic ice cave. This is no ordinary musuem, here you can walk through a real (and really cold) ice cave, watch videos about the natural landscapes and animals (including baby puffins!) inhabiting Iceland, and be thrilled by the Northern Lights show projected in the planetarium. The entrance to the Perlan Museum is already included in your package, so why not hop-off there and have a look?
Despite the fact that the pace of life is so calm and relaxing in the city, before you know it, the day will have slipped by......
But that doesn't mean the excitement ends there! Here is your second opportunity to experience the Northern Lights in Iceland. This time, instead of getting on a bus, you will climb aboard a boat with your English-speaking guide and set sail into the bay surrounding Reykjavik in order to witness the Auroras Borealis while being gently rocked by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Night in downtown Reykjavík.
DAY 4: SNAEFELLSNES PENINSULA
You're at the half way point of your one week trip in Iceland, and there is still so much to see!
If you have ever read or heard about the book, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” by Jules Verne, then you already have heard of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. In the book, the characters descend to the depths of the planet through a volcano, the very same volcano found on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, in the west of Iceland.
The tour lasts the entire day (about 12 hours), during which you will be accompanied by an experienced and knowledgeable English-speaking guide. The guide will unlock the geological mysteries of the marvelous landscapes, the black sand beaches, the lava fields and so much more, all of which will leave you astonished. Learn about the ‘little island’ and how despite its size, there are so many drastically different landscapes in one location.
Night in downtown Reykjavík.
DAY 5: SOUTHERN COAST OF ICELAND
Pack your bags! The best winter trip Iceland has to offer is breaking free of Reykjavík. It’s time to leave behind the city and set out on an exciting 2-day tour to explore the wondrous southern parts of Iceland, where you will find the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Iceland.
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, which waters cascade from 62 meters up, is a beauty to behold from the first sighting, but it also creates an impressive liquid curtain which you can walk behind (during the winter months the access may be limited).
Skógafoss Waterfall, measures 60 meters in height and you definitely want to ascend to that point, as the views from above might be better than those from below.
Leaving fresh water behind, you will arrive in the pretty village of Vík which is known for the jet black sand which lies on the Reynisfjara beach. From this beach you will have amazing views of Reynisdrangar, which is a collection of basalt sea stacks - huge rock formations which jut out of the ocean into the sky - which has earned the beach recognition worldwide.
After a day of one natural masterpiece after another, you will arrive to a rural (but very comfortable and cozy) hotel to spend the night. If you have the time and energy, you have your 3rd opportunity to glimpse the Northern Lights as they are projected onto the night sky of the southern coast of Iceland.
Night in the south of Iceland.
DAY 6: JÖKULSÁRLÓN LAGOON / VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER
If you believe that you have seen all Iceland has to offer, you would be mistaken. Just wait until you see icebergs floating within a glacier lake, as ICE takes center stage this day.
And we do mean ‘center stage’ as the area surrounding the Vatnajökull Glacier, which contains the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, has been used in such films as: “James Bond: Die Another Day” “Batman Begins” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
There you will have the unique opportunity to enter an actual, authentic ice cave. The glacier caves are fragile and yet they support the weight of the glacier above it. The fantastic rays of green light penetrate the strained ice and create an incredible natural spectacle. The atmosphere within the cave is simply unforgettable-soothing and icy while moving and invigorating at the same time. Due to the temperatures within the cave which are lower than the temperatures outside, it is very important that you come in your warmest clothes such as waterproof or insulated jackets, pants and shoes/boots.
From there, you will make your final stop for the day and the final chance of the trip to bear witness to the Auroras Borealis from within Skaftafell National Park.
Night in downtown Reykjavík.
DAY 7: BLUE LAGOON
There is nothing more relaxing and indulging than finishing a trip such as this with some time at a spa, and not just any spa, but the world famous, collector of multiple awards and the most popular spot on the island for local and visitors alike- the Blue Lagoon. Give your mind and body a rest from the traveling, walking and site seeing by enjoying a truly pampering experience at the Blue Lagoon.
The Blue Lagoon Iceland is the #1 most visited attraction on the island and with good reason! The blue waters are a constant 37–39 °C (99–102 °F) all year, naturally contain minerals, silica and algae, and have been scientifically proven to have healing properties for those suffering from skin conditions.
Enjoy the VIP transportation to and from the lagoon, take all the time you want to bath in the nutrient rich waters, have a drink at the lagoon's bar, and rejuvenate your skin with a mud mask. You have the chance to upgrade your entrance and services within the Blue Lagoon as well, so let us know if you'd like an 'in-water' massage as well when you make your reservation.
When you arrive back to Reykjavík we want to leave you with a good taste in your mouth, so we invite you to the best Iceland and Reykjavík has to offer in terms of their culinary wonders, with dinner at the best seafood buffet in the Reykjavík Restaurant. Go all out on the ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet and enjoy the delicious dishes which are traditional to Iceland.
DAY 8: REYKJAVIK / TRANSPORTATION TO AIRPORT
Depending on the time of your flight, you may have free time to visit Reykjavík, make your last purchases and enjoy one last bite of food before taking the Fly Bus back to Keflavík International Airport.
WHY TAKE THIS TRIP
The Auroras Borealis tour through Iceland highlights the best Iceland trip in the winter in just one week. It is a performance that cannot be found in any theater around the world. You journey from the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in the west to the most impressive glacier Iceland houses - Vatnajökull - to the glacier lagoon on Jökulsárlón in the southeast of Iceland. You experience things you didn’t know existed - a natural ice cave, see places you couldn’t have imagined in your wildest imagination - icebergs floating on a glacier lagoon, and feel warm and relaxation among a blackened, icy landscape - the Blue Lagoon.
And of course, you have multiple opportunities to see the Northern Lights, from the outskirts of Reykjavík to the south of Iceland to the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. Why take THIS tour? Why not?!
Important note: The ice caves are a natural phenomenon which are constantly changing, day by day. The experienced guide will choose the best cave according to the conditions at that moment. During the tour, if the climate conditions make a visit to the caves impossible or unrecommended, the guests will take a trekking tour on a glacier.
