CAR RENTAL CONDITIONS AND INSURANCE ON ICELAND

General terms and conditions Islandica

 1. GENERAL 

PAYMENTS: The client is responsible for making the payment for the reserved vehicle on the date when the rebtak starts, it is to say upon pick up the the rental office on Iceland. tion invoice.  It the rental is not paid and the reservation was not cancelled we reserve the right to add a 0.05% daily interest until the reservation is paid for.

DRIVING LICENSE NEEDED FOR RENTAL CARS ON ICELAND: A valid driving license is requested which have been held by the driver for at least 12 months prior the rental start. The driving license must be presented at the rental office upon vehicle pick up. The renter must be 20 years of age to rent a vehicle at Blue Car Rental. To rent a large size SUV or a passenger car the renter must be 23 years of age.

AGE REQUIREMENTS: The driver must be at least 20 years old to be able to rent a standard vehicle. In order  to rent a larger size SUV vehicle or 7-9 pax passenger car the driver must be at least 23 years old.

FLIGHTS: Islandica is not responsible for changes, delays or cancellations in flight schedules.

LOCAL TAXES: Local value added tax (VAT) is 24%

CREDIT CARD OR DEBIT CARD IMPRINT: All rentals are subject to the acceptation of complete rental agreement terms and conditions at the time of rental. A credit card imprint will be taken at the start of the rental for security reasons and to cover the self-risk in case of an accident. This credit card imprint may be used to pay all extra charges as extra insurance, parking fines, tunnel fees,  damages or any extra cost caused due to the rented car as a result of the driver and renter's usage of the car.

RENTAL PERIOD: The minimum rental period for standard cars and 4x4 four wheel drives is  48 hours. When the drop-off time is one hour or more after the pick-up time, it is charged as a full day.

2. PICK-UP & DROP-OFF LOCATION

The pick up and drop locations are available at Keflavík International airport (KEF/REK) at our office situated at Blikavollour 4.  And also in Reykjavík Center office located at:  

3. CANCELLATION AND RESERVATION POLICY

If the client/ driver cancels the reservation more than 48 hours prior to the rental start, there is no cancellation fee.

If the cliet / driver  cancels the the reservation with less than 48 hours notice, the cancellation fee is 100% of the confirmed rental price.

In case of no show or cancellation the same day, the full rental price must be paid to Islandica.

VOLUNTARY CHANGES BY THE CUSTOMER: In the event that the client voluntarily requests any modification of the contracted services (for example: change of dates, change of a car category, extension of the rental, etc.) Prices may vary. In this case, the client has to pay the corresponding price and the appropriate management costs, as a result of the processing of the new reservation made.

ANTICIPATED RETURNS: In the case returning the vehicle ahead of time or agreed date,  Islandica and Car Rental provider is not committed to make any refund. Early returns are always allowed. 

4. OBLIGATIONS OF THE CLIENT / DRIVER

TRAVELLING ABROAD: Taking the car outside of Icealand (to a different country) is strictly forbidden.

5. VEHICLE DESCRIPTIONS

CAR TYPES

We reserve the right to substitute vehicles when the reserved car types are not available. We cannot always guarantee the brand, but we can guarantee a similar car or an upgrade instead.

FUEL TANK

The rental car will normally have a full tank of fuel. The car should be returned full or a charge will be made for having the tank refilled even if it is missing just some liters. In case the fuel tank is not full at the time of the rental, the car should be returned with the same amount of gas in it. If the car is returned with less gas than when it was rented, we will charge the cost for the missing gas plus an additional ISK 2.000

CHILD SEATS

In Iceland, it is mandatory for young children to travel in safety seats while in a vehicle. Child seats are available if pre-ordered at a reasonable additional charge. These child seats are generally suitable for children aged from 6 months to +4 years of age. Booster seats are free of charge at Blue Car Rental.

The vehicle shown in the photographs on our website may not be exactly the same as you will receive, but we always guarantee a vehicle of the same or similar category, or higher category. In case you do not agree with a possible change, you must indicate it before picking up the vehicle, subsequent claims will not be accepted. If you detect any problem, indicate it directly to the car rental company in Iceland before starting the trip or during the trip to be able to assist you when necessary. Subsequent claims will not be accepted.

6. INSURANCE

Third part liability is equivalent to the amount stipulated by Icelandic law at each time. This also applies to the amount of individual driver liability. Third party coverage and personal accident insurance is automatically included in your rental and in the self-risk liability amount mentioned here below. If for some reason, the renter causes damages to a third-party vehicle, without causing damages to the rented vehicle, the third-party liability is a total of ISK 35.000.

COLLISION/SUPER COLLISSION DAMAGE WAIVER (CDW/SCDW)

We at Blue Car Rental, include the Super Collision damage waiver (SCDW) along with the Collision damage waiver (CDW) in our prices. A renter which only has the CDW is liable for damages amounting up to ISK 350.000 but since the SCDW is included, the maximum self-risk amount is ISK 90.000 for all 2wd cars and ISK 120.000 for all 4wd cars and larger passenger cars. We offer our customers this to provide them with more security when travelling and a more enjoyable experience.

GRAVEL PROTECTION (GP)

This protection includes damage to the windscreen, headlights, front bumper, mirrors, and the hood of the car when gravel or rocks gets thrown onto the vehicle by another car. The gravel protection (GP) is included. The self-risk amount for a broken windscreen is ISK 20.000.

THEFT PROTECTION (TP)

TP covers theft of the rental vehicles. (included)

SAND AND ASH PROTECTION (SAAP)

For our customer's protection we have decided to offer an insurance which covers our customers against damage due to sand and ash storm which damages the paint of the car, windows, lights, and plastic. These damages can cost between 500.000 to 1.500.000 ISK to fix. By purchasing SAAP the self-risk in case of damage from sand and ash is lowered to 90.000 ISK. We offer the SAAP for only 1.650 ISK per day. Volcano eruptions in the past years have increased the risk of damage to the paint and windows of all cars and no insurance company will cover these damages. In high winds and dry weather, the
ash from the volcanos and sand in the south coast can cause huge damage to the cars and all the cost has fallen on the renter, until now. (NOT included

THE FOLLOWING DAMAGES ARE NOT COVERED BY ANY INSURANCES:

Damages caused by negligence or driving while intoxicated.
Damages to the tires and service related to changing or repairing the tire.
Note: Only applies if the renter has not opted for the Liability Waiver and/or Roadside Assistance Waiver.
Damages to the underside of the car.
Damages caused by driving into waters, rivers or off-roading.
Damages caused to the clutch or other mechanical damages resulting from the renters negligence or misuse of the car.
Damages caused to the interior of the car.
Damage caused by sand and ash storm. (only applies if the renter has not opted for the SAAP or the LW insurance).

THE FOLLOWING CHARGES ARE NOT COVERED BY ANY INSURANCES:

Charges or other costs for required assistance because of a breakdown or damage that is the driver´s responsibility.
Charges when pumping the wrong fuel on the car
Charges for losing accessories, such as the car key or a GPS unit.
Service charges and handling fee related to the renters use of the car, such as fines for speeding, parking fee and tunnel fee.
General charges for towing, resulting from the renters misuse or mistake such as getting stuck in snow, sand, water or river.

Note: By purchasing Roadside Assistance Waiver any cost for the above-mentioned assistance is reduced to zero apart from service charges or handling fee related to speeding, parking violation or parking,- tunnel,- or other entrance fees.

 

LIABILITY WAIVER (SAAP and Tire Protection included)
All our customers can reduce their liability to zero by opting for our Liability Waiver. As many of our customers wanted to have a carefree experience while driving around Iceland, we introduced the Liability Waiver. This allows our renters to drive carefree with Blue Car Rental while enjoying our beautiful island.

 

*Note - Tire Protection only covers the damage of the tire, i.e. the repair or cost of new tire. It does NOT cover the assistance required. By purchasing Roadside Assistance Waiver the cost for the assistance is waived.

Keep in mind that the Liability Waiver is not extra insurance but an option for our renters to waive their liability in case of any damage covered by our insurances. This includes CDW/SCDW, GP, TP, SAAP, and Tire Protection and is subjected to the terms and conditions of the Rental Agreement. Excluded are any damages not covered by insurances as stated in Article 29 and 32 in the Rental Agreement and terms and conditions. 7. ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE WAIVER

Blue Car Rental offers 24/7 Roadside- and breakdown assistance through our phone number +354 773-7070. We have service partners all around the country that we use in case of breakdown, accidents, damages or other incidents that require assistance. In case a replacement car is needed due to such an incident Blue Car Rental of course provides the renter with a new car as quickly as possible.

The Roadside Assistance Waiver reduces the amount that Blue Car Rental charges for assistance that is required because of a breakdown, accident, damage, or other reasons that are the driver´s / renter´s responsibility to ZERO.

If roadside assistance is required because of a breakdown, accident, damage or other reasons that are the driver´s / renter´s responsibility Blue Car Rental will charge the renter for the assistance. The fee for such assistance and/or retrieval fee for picking up a rental car can often vary from 35.000 ISK to 450.000 ISK depending on the location and what type of assistance is required. That is in addition to the damages to the rental car itself. This fee is of course not charged if the assistance can be traced to a breakdown, accident, damage, or other reasons that are Blue Car Rental´s responsibility.

The Roadside Assistance Waiver however limits such unexpected and often high expenses to zero and allows our renters to have a more carefree vacation.

SERVICE FEE

This fee does not apply when the damages incurred are not caused by the renter. There is a handling fee of up to 50 EUR for all fines or charges that result from the renter's use of the car and the renter does not pay himself. Blue Car Rental will charge the renter for fines and charges plus the previously mentioned handling fee. If the car is returned extra dirty there is a cleaning fee of 15.000 ISK. This is in the case of an extremely dirty car, especially on the inside. Not from regular use of the car. Smoking is strictly forbidden in the car. If someone smokes inside the car, the renter will be liable for a cleaning fee and fine of 45.000 ISK. The retrieval fee for picking up the rental car because of damages or other reasons that can be related to the renters' responsibility is 350 ISK per km or a minimum of 35.000 ISK. The 350 ISK per km charge is calculated from Blue Car Rental's Keflavík Airport Office.

Through our reservation process, the payment for the reservation and by accepting the keys to your rental car, you have acknowledged and agreed to our terms & conditions of the rental agreement.

8. VEHICLE AND CAR RENTALS IN ICELAND

INSURANCE IN ICELAND: In the event of an accident, the customer must pay the supplier the total repair or the value to replace the vehicle. With CDW insurance, each rental car company in Iceland sets a franchise for the categories of small cars, larger cars, 4x4 cars, and / or motorhomes. Check the conditions before signing the rental agreement. Keep in mind that insurance in Iceland does not cover damage caused by river crossings, gravel damage and damage caused by driving on tracks marked with letter F for vehicles other than 4x4, also including: Kjölur - Highway 35 and Kaldidalur - Highway 550), etc. It is also forbidden to drive off the roads and tracks (off-road driving), in which case the insurance will not cover the damages caused.

ATTENTION: In Iceland the standard insurances DO NOT COVER the damages caused to the tires, headlights, windows and windshields in case of breakage. Damage to the paint caused by the projection of sand and gravel is also not covered. Rental cars in Iceland ARE NOT insured for water damage. If the client decides to cross the rivers, he does so at his own risk and responsibility. The vehicles are also not insured for any damages down to the undercarriage of the vehicle, such as those caused by animals and for serious negligence of the client and / or driver.

The insurance also does not cover damage caused by force majeure, natural disasters (eruptions, earthquakes, avalanches, lava etc.), wars, invasions, strikes, revolutions or similar causes.

Each client will sign the rental agreement (in English) with the corresponding company when picking up the vehicle. We advise you to read these contracts carefully and to be aware of what the insurance in Iceland covers and does not cover insurance before starting the trip. Islandica is not responsible for any material or personal damage occurred during the trip.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All charges, both mandatory and additional, will be paid directly at the destination in the local currency ISK or EUR. We warn our customers that not even SCDW, ASAAP, GP insurances are full coverage insurance. The customer should make sure that he/she understands the rental conditions of the provider and what the insurance includes or does not include in Iceland. Customers are informed that rental agreements in Iceland are signed in English.

 
9. CONFIDENTIALITY AND PRIVACY POLICY

Islandica, through its web page "www.viajesislandia.com" asks the User for certain personal data. The data provided by the User will be incorporated into a personal data reservation system, and will only be processed in order to provide the services requested by the User. The User authorizes Islandica to include their personal data in our files, as well as their use and automated or not, treatment for the management of our services. The User authorizes Islandica to transfer their data to companies directly or indirectly linked to Islandica. The personal information collected from registered users is stored in a database owned by Islandica, which assumes the technical, organizational and security measures that guarantee the confidentiality and integrity of the information in accordance with the provisions of the current Law of Czech Republic, Protection of Personal Data, and other applicable legislation. ISLANDICA s.r.o. only shares the necessary information to be able to process the excursion bookings and the payment transactions. ISLANDICA s.r.o. does not sell the private information to the third parties. Information about cookies and their use by us on this Website can be found in our Statement on Cookies.

11. RESPONSIBILITY - EXCURSIONS IN ICELAND NATURE

All outdoor activities in the Icelandic nature carry an inherent risk. ISLANDICA s.r.o. or its providers do not assume any responsibility for accidents, loses or injuries that are experienced by or caused by its customers or can be traced to their own actions or are caused by factors outside of human control (Force majeure). Our clients should take note that all activities in the Icelandic nature are undertaken entirely at their own risk. The clients must behave in accordance with the instructions of the guides and also take their proper responsibility for their own safety. By reserving any of the excursion at our website and checking the I Agree box and with the reservation of the selected excursion, the client agrees to these conditions. The client also indicates that he/she understands the implications and accepts responsibility for his/her own risk in the participation of any of our excursions. Also the clients should note, that depending on the chosen trip the client may be requested to sign an additional liability release on location prior to certain excursions. Please note, that not all the excursions displayed on our website are operated by ISLANDICA s.r.o. Some of these tours are operated by Icelandic Travel agencies and other companies registered in the touristic sector in accordance with the Icelandic law for travel businesses. In these cases ISLANDICA s.r.o. only works as an intermediary agent.
